We live in a world that’s feelings based. “Do what makes you happy.” “Live in your truth.” “If it doesn’t make you happy, don’t do it.”
While I’m not advocating for being miserable, our calling as believers isn’t limited to do what we feel. We’re called to live a life of obedience. Sometimes God will ask us to do things that are scary, uncomfortable, or even new. Think of how Gideon felt leading a small army, or Esther when she risked her life on behalf of her people? Hard tasks, and if emotionally led, who knows the outcomes they would have had?
As Christian Singles, it’s easy to give into our emotions. Good or bad. There’s nothing wrong with having feelings for another person. It’s okay to like them. It’s okay to grow in love. The question is, is this relationship pleasing to the Lord?We don’t think about this much in dating. It’s more focused on how the other person makes us feel, right? Do we laugh together? Have fun. Is there romance? All are important, but kingdom connections run deeper. Marriage or not, there’s a heavenly assignment for you to complete. That calling can’t be compromised for a relationship. Is the person you’re dating slowing you down, or are they your biggest cheerleader in your calling? Do they help you?
Key questions to ask when it’s easy to get caught up in the emotions of a relationship. This is not to over spiritualize anything, but to make certain we’re asking ourselves the right questions in dating. Good qualities in a person are fine, but is it enough? Sure, they make you laugh, but can they cover you in prayer? They’re fun to be with, but will they fight for you when satan attacks? They’re not just a life partner, but are they a fellow warrior in the spirit? Will they fight for Godliness in your home? Will they call out and encourage the gifts God has put in you? Again, we don’t think about this, so I hope this gives a fresh perspective. Yes, your emotions are great indicators.
God gave them to us to use for a reason. We shouldn’t walk through life cold and calloused. If you feel that way because of past hurts, take that to the Lord in prayer. Ask Him to heal and restore those hard places inside you. He doesn’t want you to shut down so you’ll never feel again. Yet, He doesn’t want you emotionally led that you ignore His voice. Sometimes He’ll warn you, and other times He’ll confirm the right choices.
