I recently watched a YouTube video where Pastor Tim Ross addressed a single woman’s heartfelt question: “Why am I not married yet?” At first, she hesitated to acknowledge it, but deep down, her question stemmed from a strong desire that God hadn’t fulfilled yet. I totally get that feeling. Honestly, even after marriage, there’s always something in our lives we wish was better or further along.
While diving into the book of James, I was struck again by the familiar phrase, “count it all joy.” We often hear this alongside advice like, “be content with where God has placed you.” What struck me about Tim Ross’ response was his encouragement to be raw and real with God. He referenced Psalm 77, where the writer openly pours out his heart to the Lord.
Lysa TerKeurst has a beautiful take on “count it all joy,” interpreting it as looking for joy glimpses even amidst pain. Combining this with Psalm 77, it’s clear we can be candid with God about our struggles, yet still search for those joy glimpses. How is God showing His goodness? What blessings do we have right now? This doesn’t change our circumstances, but it powerfully shifts our perspective. Our hearts fill with gratitude, and that’s when the joy of the Lord truly overflows.
So, today, I encourage you to look for those joy glimpses in your life. It’s okay to be honest with God about your challenges and heartaches. But also, take a moment to recognize His love for you. See how He’s sustained and carried you through. This isn’t just about changing what’s around us, but transforming what’s within us. Let’s embrace this journey together, finding joy in every step.
