God In The Wilderness

At the end of 2023, I invited my husband to join me on a Single Plus podcast episode titled ‘God in the Wilderness.’ I understand what it’s like to feel as if you’re in a dry place. Some might ask, ‘But Daria, you’re married. How can you be in a dry place?’

Yes, I am in a thriving Kingdom marriage that pleases the Lord, but that doesn’t mean other parts of my life are immune to the enemy’s attacks. During this wilderness season, God has taught me many valuable lessons, including those from reading John Bevere’s book God, Where Are You? It’s easy to blame the devil, but remember, even Jesus was led into the wilderness by Holy Spirit. It wasn’t a punishment. In fact, He had just been declared God’s Son during His own baptism.

So, why would God lead His only Son into the wilderness for 40 days and nights? I’m learning that the wilderness is not a punishment. It’s not because God doesn’t love you – He does. It’s not a consequence of something you did wrong or a punishment for something you did years ago. No, that’s not it. The wilderness is meant to purge and for growth and development. Sometimes, unfruitful things in our lives need to die in the wilderness.

I’m discovering that although the wilderness is dry, God is a river in the desert. He knows how to provide water from a rock. Ask the children of Israel. He provided water, manna, and even meat for them. Their shoes and clothes didn’t wear out. So, how does this relate to singleness?

If you’re in a dry spell, remember God is with you in the wilderness. Don’t be like the children of Israel who murmured and complained, which only prolonged their wilderness season, and a whole generation died without seeing the Promised Land. I don’t know what your Promised Land is. For many, it’s a spouse. You yearn for a kingdom relationship, longing to spend your life with the right person.

After 12 years of singleness with no suitable prospects, I can tell you that God can turn this around. I’m not saying your wilderness will last 12 years. I don’t know when it will end, but don’t miss the opportunity to see God provide for you in a dry place. As we start 2024, remember that God is for you. Isaiah 40:4-5 (NKJV) says, “Every valley shall be exalted. And every mountain and hill brought low; the crooked paths shall be made straight and the rough places smooth.”

What does this mean? Even in valleys, God can raise you up. If the mountain seems too high, He can bring it down and make a crooked path straight. If God could split rock and make the walls of Jericho crumble for His children Israel, imagine what He will do for us now that we are in the kingdom, thanks to Jesus!
