It occurred to me recently that one of the best and worst phrases we can utter is
“I thought I could handle this on my own.”
In this world we are taught to have the desire to be independent, strong, well adjusted and capable. The worst part of the phrase is that we actually believe we ought to take things on by ourselves. We withhold truths and refrain from asking for help or even sharing hardships with the people who love us. We subject ourselves to isolation and loneliness when we choose to believe that lie. We miss out on so much that God has to offer when we close off and shut down our connections with other people and the world around us.
The best part of this phrase is when we are able to come to the understanding and realize that we actually couldn’t, and perhaps shouldn’t, have handled things “on our own.” We are now left with the alternative. We are not meant to take things on alone. The world calls us out into solitude and calls it strength. God calls us in a different way.
In Matthew 28:20 Jesus says, “I will be with you always.” Hebrews 13:5 God is quoted saying “Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.” Genesis 2:18 God said, “It is not good for man to be alone.”
The scriptures pointing to this are countless. He calls us to cast all of our worries on Him. He created us to be in community, to rely on Him and to rely on His work through us for the benefit of one another. When we come to this realization we can see a glimpse of the best he has to offer.
