Start With The House

This week I was praying, while at work, for clarity and wisdom in some areas. I have some big decisions coming up in the next six months to a year. I’ve definitely been trying to focus big picture as opposed to looking at those things right in front of me. I tend to be a dreamer. The saying “you can’t see the forest for the trees” has me feeling more like “I can’t see the trail in front of me because I’m staring at this massive forest.” So what do we do in these situations?

As I was talking to Jesus, I listed off all the things I need to do. Write the blog post, train for that half marathon, figure out details for events on the calendar, clean up the the house, budget, reply to friends, podcast discussions, work on Bible study topics, the list could go on and on. I was going through the motions of work, but internally I’m having this dialog with the Holy Spirit. Out of nowhere I sense a pause. The thought screams in my head “START WITH THE HOUSE!”

In the gospels we see stories about being faithful with little things and how God will honor that faithfulness. As I prayed this passage came to mind “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.” Luke 16:10 For me the little thing on my list was cleaning up my house. When we have our house in order we feel more equipped and prepared to tackle other things. So with laundry piles folded on the bedroom floor, dishes in the sink, shoes all over the mudroom, and even a bed unmade I knew I needed to get to it. I’d love to say I got off work and immediately went home to get started, but I didn’t. I got busy with other responsibilities. Responsibilities as a single parent that were definitely necessary and a priority at the time. As I got caught up in the busyness, I realized an afternoon turned evening and here I was not working that list I had given God. I hadn’t “Started With The House” yet.

While I may have other things going on, I  know that my journey to peace in the midst of that to do list starts at home. I’ve felt the anxiety of not knowing where to start. This forest of important things before me was so big that I couldn’t see the trail head labeled “Start With The House.”

I know it isn’t always this simple. Life can be so complex. I want to encourage you to start small. Be faithful in the little things. Be consistent in the little things. As I began embracing the idea of cleaning house, ideas sparked for writing topics and podcast conversations. God does care. He has a path forward for all of us. Whether we are looking for a spouse or trying to find breathing room in life, He is present.

Take a minute to pause. Seek first His Kingdom. Listen to His prompts. Take the first step. Start with the house. This journey in a life with Jesus can only be lived one day at a time. I pray we all allow Him to open our eyes to the trails in front of us.
