My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest. Yet you are holy… (Psalm 22:1-3a, ESV)
I think if anyone understands emotions in the Bible, besides Jesus is David. He could go from, “My God, why have you forsaken me” to “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!” His emotions were justified. He felt misunderstood. Abandoned. He even feared for his life when King Saul sought to kill him. David knew what it felt like to be hidden, and he poured out his heart to God in lament. Despite the trials he faced, the line that sticks out to me in the Psalm is, “Yet you are holy.”
As Christian singles, men and women, we know the rollercoaster of emotions. Some days are good and you probably enjoy being single. You look out for yourself. Depending on where you live, you have your own space. You don’t have to check in with anyone about the money you spent. You can even set the thermostat the way you like. Hot or cold. Doesn’t matter because it’s catered to you.
Then there’s the downside of not being in a relationship or married. No one to spend time with. No one to walk through life with. It’s almost Christmas, so there’s no one to kiss under the mistletoe. No one to bring home for the holidays. You’re the only one in your family not paired off. The social media posts announcing engagements, weddings, and babies are taking their toll.
You cry the same way David did in this Psalm, “Why have you left me behind God?” The pain is real regardless if you’re a forty plus single, or right out of college at twenty-two. Though it seems bleak with no prospects or your status changing by Christmas, I dare you to say, “Yet you are holy.”
Is God still holy even when date nights are solo? Is God still holy even when the status says single and has been for the last ten years? Is God still holy even when tears of loneliness soak the pillow case?
Yes! Yet He is holy! He is mighty! Powerful! All knowing! Righteous! The one who took our place on the cross over 2,000 years ago. I love how in Psalms that even when David has his moments, he still shifts to praise the Lord. I know. It’s unconventional and can feel weird when everything in your life is going wrong. Nothing’s working out. Everything you try seems to fail.
I saw a post recently that said, “I guess I’m going to live all alone since apparently I’m not that interesting.” What? As a child of God, we are fearfully and wonderfully made. Even if a human being chooses us on earth for life in marriage, God chose us first! He loved us first! If we ever think the love of a spouse is better than God, then Jesus, please forgive us.
Yes, I know it hurts when you desire a genuine relationship, but let’s not disregard the ultimate love of all time. If you have faith for a spouse, keep believing in God for it. No, there’s no promise of marriage, but you can still trust God and do your part for it to come to pass. Your faith is in Jesus, not the result. No matter what you feel today, “Yet He is holy!”
