When You Meet Someone New

So you met someone online. In person. At church. At the coffee shop. What’s next? The first date. Exciting, right? You laugh, have a great conversation, and even exchange numbers. Then you go home and picture the wedding. Wait a minute. Stop. You just met this person, right? Why are you writing out baby names?

When you meet someone new, it’s best to adopt the phrase, “one date at a time, one conversation at a time.” Don’t think too far ahead. Get intentional in getting to know the person’s heart and character. How’s their walk with Jesus? Do you see the fruits of the Spirit in their lives? Are they consistent? Pay attention to this because they can be consistent with verbal abuse and crossing boundaries. I heard in a Singles Webinar teaching, “people lie, but patterns don’t.”

So watch the patterns. That’s what you’re signing up for. Are their patterns leading you closer to God? Away from Him? How’s their character? Reflecting Jesus Christ or the world. Yes, be excited at the possibility, but don’t fall in love with a fantasy. The person in your head doesn’t exist.

If God should bless you with a relationship, great! It’s a beautiful thing when a man and woman come together as Kingdom partners. Your union is to reflect Jesus Christ and the Church. There’s nothing like that on the earth. Your relationship can witness to people even before you utter a scripture!

Yet, it takes time to build intimacy. In an “instant gratification” society, we rush things that take time. Technology may speed up daily, but human hearts still beat at the same pace God created them. Take your time. Use discernment. God will confirm as you go, but if the answer is “no,” listen to His warnings. Don’t ignore the still small voice.

So when you meet someone new, have fun getting to know a new person. They’re still a child of God. However it turns out, trust that God has a plan for you!
